Ending Homophobia Through Education

News

Paul Martin from The Lesbian & Gay Foundation talks about the importance of LGBT History Month ahead of its pre-launch on November 2nd.
"LGBT History Month takes place every February, but today sees its pre-launch. It's the time of year where schools, organisations and individuals are encouraged to celebrate lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people, their history and achievements.

Stoke Newington School in North London are reaping the benefits of celebrating LGBT History Month. Elly Barnes who teaches at the school said last week, that homophobic bullying has more or less been eradicated in the school in the last five years, after running LGBT History Month.

The EHRC's recent "How Fair is Britain?" report, revealed that two-thirds of lesbian, gay and bisexual students in Britain report being bullied, highlighting just how vital the work of Elly Barnes and countless other supportive school staff like her is.

Here in Manchester the LGF have worked with thousands of pupils and staff to encourage understanding between different communities, challenge homophobia and help make schools a safer and more welcoming place for lesbian, gay and bisexual students, staff and parents, as part of the Exceeding Expectations Anti-Homophobic Bullying initiative.

But across England only 1 in 6 secondary school teachers believe that their school is very active in promoting respect for lesbian, gay and bisexual students.

LGBT History Month is a perfect opportunity to change that, so make sure your school celebrates LGBT History Month in February 2011. You've got plenty of time to get planning, and if you need any help or ideas, simply get in touch with Exceeding Expectations at exceedingexpectations@lgf.org.uk"
