Ending Homophobia Through Education

News

One of the UK’s leading websites for gay youth, have announced the results of their latest survey.

The Puffta 2009 survey into the sex lives and schooling of UK teenage gay and bisexual males reveals that half have been bullied for being gay at school, and over three-quarters say that homosexuality has never been mentioned as part of sex education at school.

Gay Teens In The UK
The survey quizzed 12-19 year old UK males who identify as ‘gay’, ‘bisexual’ or ‘unsure of their sexuality.’ 81% of the respondents were aged between 14-19, 19% aged 12-13.

Coming Out
75% of the boys surveyed had already come out as gay or bisexual to someone. They were most likely to have told their best friend and online friends. Less then half of those who had come out had told a parent.

Bullied Boys
77% of the Puffta gay teens had witnessed homophobic bullying at school.
51% said they had been bullied for being gay.
97% of that bullying was name-calling.
29% was threats of physical violence.
15% of the Puffta teens surveyed said they’d been physically assaulted for being gay.

Silence At School
81% of the Puffta survey respondents said that homosexuality was never discussed as part of their sex education.
87% said sex education didn’t make them feel reassured about their sexuality, or made them less assured.
47% felt that their sex education was either completely unsatisfactory or mostly poor.

Matt Miles, the Puffta.co.uk Editor, said of the survey's findings:"While this survey indicates that gay teens are increasingly confident in coming out to close friends and finding boyfriends, school isn’t necessarily preparing them for a safe young adulthood. With scant discussion of same sex issues in the classroom, perhaps it’s no surprise that half of gay boys report being bullied over their sexuality."
