What is Exceeding Expectations?
This website is aimed at everyone working in education. Exceeding Expectations is a three year initiative to support schools with appropriate interventions, resources, training and advice on homophobia and sexuality.
The initiative is an unprecedented collaboration between the Lesbian and Gay Foundation, Manchester City Council Children’s Services (Manchester Education Partnership, Excellence in Cities, Service Improvement and Inclusion), Manchester Healthy Schools Partnership and Hope Theatre Company.
Sadly young people have low expectations when it comes to challenging homophobia and talking about sexuality openly. That’s why we hope to exceed their expectations through this initiative.
Our intention is to promote a zero tolerance approach to homophobia across Children’s Services, by addressing homophobia in a similar way to racism. All forms of prejudice are damaging to the development of children and young people.
- Over the three year period, the following work streams will be developed:
- Sexuality Guidance for all professionals working with Young People, developed by Children’s Services.
- A quarterly newsletter for schools.
- A ‘culture change’ support programme in schools.
- Practical support for schools including theatre in education.
- Positive role models for young people.
- Increased monitoring and effective challenging of homophobic incidents.
- Promotion of good practice.
- Conference and city showcase.
